Выражение связано с тем, что у человека, смеющегося вопреки своей воле, от досады якобы усиленно выделяется желчь, что придает его лицу желтый оттенок.
Поэтому «желтый смех» является синонимом принужденного, притворного смеха. Любопытно отметить, что еще в старину желтый цвет считался цветом лжи и неискренности.
Эго народное поверье отражено в стихах средневекового французского поэта Гильома де Машо (ок. 1300-1377):
Le noir se monstre en la couleur
Signifiance de douleur ;
Blanc, joie; vers, nouvellete;
Et le jaune, c'est fausseté.
