Death is like the insect

Menacing the tree,

Competent to kill it,

But decoyed may be.

Смерть словно жук,

Грозящий погубить листву.

Но - может быть - он сам

У дерева в плену.

Bait it with the balsam,

Seek it with the saw,

Baffle, if it cost you

Everything you are.

Помажь его бальзамом,

Спугни пилой,

Сбей с толку, если сможешь,

Тогда он – твой.

Then, if it have burrowed

Out of reach of skill —

Wring the tree and leave it,

'Tis the vermin's will.

Он будет ухищряться,

Скрываться под корой,

Тряхни ствол посильнее -

Пусть уползет живой.
